WHEN THE SECRETS OF MANKIND ARE REVEALED

WHEN THE SECRETS OF MANKIND ARE REVEALED

Only time will reveal the many secrets that are hidden away within the wilderness of the far north. You cannot traverse its forests, lakes and ancient decaying cabin sites without wondering about those who traveled those same paths before you. I have stood among the remains of what was once a busy, bustling settlement, a place where people lived, loved and dreamed of what the future held for them. Today, all that remains of their backbreaking labor and tireless efforts are a handful of decaying, moss covered log cabins; Looking about I see what was once a sturdy well built home site, now a well worn moose trail passes only a few feet from what's left of their front door stoop. Beneath a massive forest giant rests an old moldering saw horse, still standing where its owner used it for the last time and for reasons unknown never returned to use it again. In the yard lies the broken pieces of a little one's toy, a child who once played in that very yard, but who no doubt died and passed to dust long ago.

You can't help but feel a sense of loneliness and sadness as you stand there listening to the wind as it whistles through the skeleton-like remains of what once was someone's dream. Who could help but wonder what had forced its former occupants to abandon everything, pull up stakes and leave? And what had become of the lonely men and of the families that had once lived within the log walls of these dwellings? How many of them were God fearing people? Had they ever had anyone tell them the old, yet timeless story of the cross?

I recall one instance when I'd paddled deep into some of the wildest, most remote country imaginable. Late in the day I waded ashore on a heavily forested island. Hauling my canoe up onto the land, I went to look around before gathering firewood and setting up camp.

Making my way through a very dense tangle of spruce trees and underbrush, I finally broke through into a small forest encircled glade. As I paused there momentarily I saw before me a tiny mound of earth, and at its head stood a crude wooden marker. Two short lengths of sapling had been cut and bound together to make a cross. Judging by its size, it appeared to be the grave of a child. How many years had it stood there? And what was it doing in this lonely, remote place? What story of grief and sadness did that secluded little glade conceal?

WHEN HIDDEN SECRETS ARE REVEALED

In the summer of 1983 a new officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was assigned to the area in which we lived. To familiarize himself with the surrounding terrain of his new outpost, he struck out across country on foot. Little did he know that he was about to be welcomed to his new post in a most unforgettable way. As he made his way across the wild, uninhabited spruce forests, muskeg, and lakes … by sheer accident … he stumbled upon the remains of a human skeleton. The bones had been there less than a year. Who had they belonged to, and what had happened to him?

Though the identity of the dead man could not be determined, there was one unmistakable detail that told part of the story. The man's skull had a bullet squarely through the middle of the forehead. What had transpired on that fateful day when this grisly deed had taken place? What was it that had led someone to commit murder? Who had the victim been? And what was the identity of his murderer? The answers to those questions were never found.

The Mounties have a motto. It says that they always get their man. But this was one time when that motto was proven wrong. The murderer got away with his crime undetected, and no doubt still roams those wilderness trails to this day. Nor is he the only one of his kind out there; more than one such tale could be told. I have sat by many a campfire, and always my rifle and hunting knife were kept well within reach. And when inside my tent I always slept with my rifle on one side and a hatchet and knife on the other side. There are more than Grizzlies to be reckoned with when traveling alone in wild country. Some may scoff at those habits of mine, but I still practice the same habits when camping here in the states. Some do not, and some are not around because of it.

But will the murderers crime go unpunished? Many things about this world remain a mystery. Many wrongs have never been made right; many questions remain unanswered, and many crimes go unpunished, but there is coming a time when all that is going to be changed. A day is fast approaching when God Himself is going to even the score. On the pages of the greatest book ever written, we read: "The day will surely come when, at God's command, Jesus Christ will judge the secret lives of everyone, their inmost thoughts and motives …," (Romans 2:16NLT) "For everything that is hidden or secret will

eventually be brought to light and made plain to all."(Luke 8:17NLT) "For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." (Galatians 6:7KJV) The Killer mentioned in the story above managed to successfully evade the Mounties, and to this day his identity is unknown. Will he go unpunished?

I think not.
